Having one of each rig, I prefer the Argonaut V for CW. Its filtering is
far superior to what I am able to achieve in the FT-817 using a 500 Hz
Collins filter. There is no comparison between QSK in the two; the
Argonaut V is vastly superior.
Having said that, the Argonaut V does not do VHF or UHF. So for enhanced
functionality, the FT-817 wins. Also, for those of us prone to connect
everything electronic to a computer, Simon Brown's "FT-817 Commander" and
"PSK31 Deluxe" are as nice as anything out there for a radio interface and
Both are great rigs. For contesting or difficult band conditions, I use
the Argonaut. For more casual operation and for digital modes, I use the
FT-817. You can't go wrong with either one.
