It was my impression that the reason for better propagation in the
winter was that the noise levels from summer solar activity
goes down... longer nights, a less direct shot from the sun
to the northern hemisphere, that kind of thing.
(That makes me wonder if southern hemisphere propagation works
better in june-august!)
There are others on the list much more authoritative than me
on the subject. I hope one of them gives us the straight dope.
