I am about ready to hit the bands with QRP PSK31. I have been transmitting
into a dummy load to become familiar with the DIGIPAN software I will use
for my introduction to this mode. I have 'watched' many QSO's over the
past couple of days. I do have several questions...
1. The level of audio output from the two jacks on my sound card have
significantly different levels of audio output. I have explored the level
controls and do not seem to be able to set up a situation where the level
of audio output is the same. These differences lead to some confusion
when I attached one of the jacks to my OMNI V and could not produce a
signal in transmit. I then reversed this connection with the computer
speakers and have audio input into the OMNI V, but can 'barely' hear the
received PSK signal. ( I do not need to hear this signal, but I am
curious as to the possible cause for this difference in audio level output
from the sound card).
2. I am a CW only op and have never owned a microphone and transmitted a
SSB signal with my OMNI V. Through the use of the level control in
DIGIPAN and a control in the audio line to the audio in jack of the OMNI
V, it is possible to move the microphone control very slightly in a
clockwise direction from its full counterclockwise setting to activate the
ALC indicator...or with a change in the settings of control in the audio
line to require the microphone control to be turned nearly fully clockwise
before the ALC indicator is activated. Most information I have read
indicates that the microphone control should be positioned where 'normal
SSB operation takes place.' Help, I have no idea of the appropriate
position for the microphone control...
3. In watching the PSK frequencies I see there is alot of 'clutter' being
recorded on the screen...random characters to do not appear to be
associated with QSO...for example, when there is a change over during the
QSO or when you are not tuned to a specific signal. Is this clutter of
characters normal, or is there some aspect of the software that I have not
discovered?
Thanks...look for me on QRP PSK31 this weekend
