I also noticed a noise-like amplitude variation on his signal. I usually
watch received CW characters on a scope - don't ask, I just like doing
it! - and I noticed that when I could hear a roughness on his signal
that the audio waveform was also distorted with an amplitude variation.
So, perhaps he was having rig problems as well as antenna problems.

Here in North Central Texas, the QSB was major and rapid. But, when he
would fade on the horizontal wire, he would peak up on the vertical. So,
by switching between the two, I was able to keep up with him fairly well
until I got him in the sights at 0240Z. Bang!!

A "challenging" hunt, to say the least. He was having problems as well,
since I had to send my entire exchange three times before getting a QSL.
