Hi All,
Happy New Year to all!
The issue of which OS to use was always easy for me to get a handle on when
I used to have to work for a living..... :-)
I simply looked at the job that needed to be done and selected the software
that would best do it. That usually dictated the OS.
The OS is nothing more than just another tool. Same with the software.
Chose the right tool just like you would for your car or electronic project.
I have found that for people who only use computers to get a job done, like
making overheads for a presentation or doing some word processing with
pictures and other similar chores, Windoz XXX is better. UNIX normally
doesn't have the software available and if it's there, you are still forced
to jump through some extra hoops to import data from other programs. DOS
isn't very good for moving data from program to program either.
But to import data from MS Access, Word, Excel and other such programs, into
something like Power Point is just about as simple as clicking with the
mouse.
All this has nothing much to do with just how good or bad the OS might be,
but has everything to do with the productivity you can get from the user.
Bottom line is to chose the OS based on the job you need done. This could
well mean that you use several. I used UNIX, DOS and Windows. Each one has
it's good points and bad points. No one of them is best for everything.
Kinda like choosing a rig or antenna.
What am I using here in the RV?? Gee, I'm glad you asked! :-)
I have a HP Pavilion with Windows ME. The only problem program I've found
so far was McAfee VirusScan. Since getting rid of that, I've not had any
problems.
Do I like having to use something like Outlook Express or Netscape for
email? NO! I much prefer using PINE on the server running UNIX. Total
freedom from virus worries!
But now my ISP (BigPlanet.com) has a virus checker on their server and it
stops any email that seems bad. I like that. It has stopped 5 emails with
attachments that had Active X Controls in them. 4 of them were OK but I
just got rid of the 5th. No idea who it was from or what it was.
OK, back in my hole.....
