Hi All,

I'd like to throw out my observations on BNC connector types....

We used to make cables using the "regular" style BNC connectors.
There were many failures, both when they were first put on and
later in the field.

So a switch was made to crimp on connectors. These proved to be
much easier to install on the cable and reduced those failures
BUT.... we had a very high failure rate in the field. Within 2
years well over 50% of those connectors failed for one reason
or another. Many pulled apart due to the wind flexing the cable
at the connector. Others failed when the contact between the
cable shield and body of the connector became "dirty".

About 7 years ago we switched to another style of BNC connector.
It is one where you solder the pin, insert the pin and cable
into the fitting and "snap" a spring loaded "collar" to hold
everything in place.

While this sounds far too simple to work, we have had almost
no failures with these fittings in the 7 years we have used
them.

I am a believer. :-)

Another bonus is that there are no fancy tools needed to
install them on the cable.

Cable cuter (side cuters, pocket knife....whatever) stripper
(again, whatever you normaly use) and the soldering iron
of some kind.

The little "tool" to instal the spring loaded collar is
included with each fitting.

The Amphenol number for RG58AU cable is:

BNC PLUG 31-4700
BNC JACK 31-4701

Price is compairable to the other styles.

The above is just my observations from a few years of use.
I have not done any fancy tests!

We buy them from various suppliers.

Hope this helps someone....
