Hi Jerry,
When I worked in a Motorola shop I installed a lot of
radios in all kinds of vehicles.....cars, trucks, heavy
equipment, crop dusting airplanes....
With the exception of airplanes I know of no "standards"
set by any Govt agency. Some guidelines by some of the
car makers and lots of "how to's" from the radio makers.
We ALWAYS used a fuse in both the Pos and Neg leads. I
have replaced radios that became fuses......
I was driving a International dump truck when the Neg
cable "fused" while starting. The engine started, the
Harris FM radio went up in smoke but the fuse in the
Neg lead of my 2m rig blew and the rig was OK.
On the other hand, I have known a lot of hams that don't
put fuses in the Neg lead and have not lost a radio!
Bottom line seems to be that it's your radio and you
can do it however you like!

Ron, KU7Y
