Jess and others,
When you mount the bottom of the pole into the base mounting unit, it
stops on the screws used to make connections to ground and to the coil.
What I did on mine was use a small circular file and files away two
notches about 1.5-2 inches long, which slides over those screws and
allows the SLV pole to rest another 2 inches deeper into the base
mounting PVC thingie. That little extra really helped stiffen mine up.
I haven't glued mine together and it's still standing in the back yard
(about to get taken down for QRP TTF at Area 51).
On the black widows that are just a hair larger in diameter, what I did
on mine was hacksaw a couple of cuts at the bottom of the black widow
pole, which compresses the outside diameter a bit, and allows it to
fit inside the base mounting PVC thingie. (We need to standardize what
to call all these different pieces of PVC's -hi). I ended up making these
bottom cuts several inches long and it fit down into the PVC just fine.
Then I put a hose clamp on the SLV pole just above the PVC mount, just
for superstition in case the cuts in the fiberglass decided to keep
growing.
But my main SLV with Vern's coil is based on the SD-20 pole I got at
PacifiCon.
Still a good performing antenna.
