Bruce,
Get a copy of Solid State Design for the Radio Amateur, by ARRL.
Then, the QRP Data Book, by Paul Hayden. Those two should get you a long
way in designing and understanding current solid state radio design. The
ARRL Handbook is a good reference also. After that, they start getting
expensive. Rohde's book Communications Receivers is fairly good. (and
pricey) After that, you start into specialty books: synthesizers,
filters, uP controllers, low noise design, etc. A good filter book is
Williams, Electronic Filter Design Handbook. Any edition is good...the
newer editions only added some digital filter design stuff.

As far as magazines go, QST has/had good technical articles. Ham
Radio was good in the 70's, and Communications Quarterly. If you find an
old stash of these, they are very good for general technical reading.

This list provides direct access to alot of 1st class designers.
Designers love this stuff...it satisfies our creative urge :-) So, ask!
