Well I couldn't stand it anymore! The facts are
known throughout the industry -- If you have the
complete contaminate removal system which includes
the deionized water wash; that's great. But here
where I work (A major Electronics Industry Manufacturer),
much study and input from experts concluded:
Prefer to use RMA over RA flux (Rosin Mild Activated), In
fact ALL RA flux was sent to schools for their projects.
RESIN or Water-White are most inert. Most if not all
home soldering flux should be left on the board! Any attempt
using less-than-commercial chemical cleaning usually results
in releasing contaminates contained within the residue thereby
spilling out in a thin film onto the board.
If you absolutely must remove flux, the prefered method is
by chipping away with a hobby knife believe it or not.
I only remove flux when I suspect a conductive dust bridge
has formed after years in the garage. But actually I have
never found a short!
A TEST: Solder two separate connections about 1/8 inch apart.
get a 25 or 50 volt powersupply to use as a voltage source.
You don't need a lot of current, Put a 1 Meg Ohm resistor in
series with the supply for safety!
Prepare a second board where you have cleaned off the soldered
connections. In a day or two small crystalline growths,
"Dendrites" will probably grow on the cleaned circuit. If
I'm not wrong, the untouched solder connection board will
not show any growths. See for yourselves!
