ALL
I agree with the comments made by many on weak signal work.
I am not like the the QRO operator comments (why bother with the weak ones
that make us strain to hear).
I enjoy digging out the weak ones. And as Joe, AB7TT says some have better
ears than others but its all in the human ear filtering. That just takes
practice. I now on field day others have said "how did you hear that report"?
well just experience. I learned by digging out weak DX in my days of QRO.
Plus experience in Contests, digging out signals in very crowded conditions.

Yes I have very good antennas but that is not the solution to all problems,
weak signals still will be there. I've dug HP1AC and VO1DRB out of the mud
on 40M. Or Tuesday nite in the W0CQC operation on 40m digging a few out of
the mud . It may take 3-4 trys but usually I get the report.
Try the beacon Stations like WA3NNA, Pete provides an excellant method of
digging out a weak signal. I was able to get 2w, 200mw, and 20 mw this last
week end. with poor conditions his 2w signal was not over S3, so imagine were
the level of the 20mw signal . My DSP unit is not here but hope to have it
for the ARCI contest this weekend. That should help my tuned ears a bit.
For the most part just like everything else, it takes practice, practice ,
practice.
If you hear me in the Contest just try me I'll do my best to pull you out.
and in maybe 3 to 25 years of contesting and DXing you'll get there ( results
may very, disclaimer).
There is nothing wrong with good filters , IF, Scaf, DSP, Audio etc. It just
makes it easier.
