A nice combination - a receiver of superior performance, and a chance
to put together some simple ancillaries yourself - might be the
R1/R2/miniR2 kits from Kanga US. Bill sends you the receiver board and
the stuff that goes on it; you supply the VFO. You can add a
transmitter and T/R switching later to make a high-performance
transceiver.

You'll find VFO designs in all the usual references. I'm currently
refining a circuit that fits on a board the size of a postage stamp.
SMD, of course...the mechanical and thermal stability are excellent.

I decided some time ago that anything worth etching a PC board for
will be SMD - if people can refuse to work with solid state, I can
refuse to work with leaded components! Anything else I build from
scratch is ugly or stripline, depending on the frequency. Sometimes
both - you should see the 1296 MHz transverter I'm finishing... :-)
