** SIERRA CONSTRUCTION NOTES **
Greetings,
Finally got around to unpacking the NorCal Sierra kit.
While a complete inventory has not been completed, it
all seems to be there and was all packaged very nicely.
The case is drilled, but unpainted. I'm going to need
help with painting advice and other cabinet finishing
details. Something here for me to learn.
The circuit board is NorCal Rev B. I think that is good?
The 80, 40, 20, 15m band modules and 2 blanks are all there.
A bag of knobs, hardware, and the tuning capacitor was found.
Lastly, the bag of PCB parts including toroid cores and wire.
This bag has been emptied in anticipation of PCB assembly.
To be honest, it does not appear nearly as intimidating as
first thought. Stuffing the board seems pretty simple, but
I *will* use IC sockets (against other advice).
My QRPp back issues were received yesterday and I'm still in
the process of reading. My present tendency is to build as
sent as much as possible and later install the well documented
modifications in the literature. However, does ANYONE have a
recommendation about "must-build" items to include initially?
Otherwise, items will be modified and meticulously documented
*after* initial testing. (Likely to take a loooong time!)
Disclaimers:
1) this is the original NorCal kit (not Wilderness) -like the
ARRL Handbook construction project
2) don't judge assembly time by me as I am *VERY* slow at these
things and often skip a day or such building an hour or less
at a time (they usually do work after, though)
3) it will be easy for me to post step-by-step pictures of my
progress on WWW if anyone has interest
I certainly don't want to bore anyone, but this is my first multi-
band tranceiver project and I approach it as a learning process not
a race to stuff boards and wind toroids. If acceptable, I will share
this experience?
Would it be practical to consider having it ready on 20/40m for QTTF?
*OTHER*
Many have responded about the Sept 1997 "SGC/Index Group Buy." I
will contact SGC with a proposal, but realize there may be increased
interest as time progresses. Certainly this advance notice can be
used to save up for this rather large purchase. I am aware that we
are planning well in advance, but that is *MY* preferred mode! No
money etc will change hands until some of the variables are eliminated
(obviously). We have time on our side here.
