Ghost Morse

I think probably you have a tendency to hear what you are listening
for, whether it's really there or not. This opinion is based on
years in a "corporate management environment" where it was a well
know phenomenon.

It's kind of like hearing pixie voices in a babbling brook or a
filling toilet sistern or the flood cycling in a refrigerator when
the house is very quite. It's ok to hear those voices, but if you
start understanding what they are saying, well... Houston, we have a
problem.

I myself hear Ghost Morse very often on 40M, especially when I'm
listening really hard. As you know, there is a lot of foreign SSB
traffic in our little neck of the woods. I've noticed that when I
narrow my audio filter all the way down to 100Hz, I hear Ghost Morse
with alarming regularity. It's true that human speech has a 700Hz
component, and if you are listening only for that you will here it in
short pulses at frequent intervals. Is this coincidence, or is
someone using trivial SSB conversations to conceal coded messages?
I don't know, but I swear the other night I copied the words "we
must move to the other side of the comet now."
