Dunno if they are on the list or not, I doubt it, but I finally got
my first two contacts on the 38 Special -- the first HF contacts in
five years for me! One was to NG3W in PA, who gave me a 559, the
other also gave me a 559, N2YVF/QRP in Palmyra, NJ. Lots of QSB. I
was so nervous, I could barely copy anything, not because of the
sigs, but because of my lack of confidence in the code speed.
I'm not sure what comments I got about the radio -- I think they
were nice (I did align it for a pretty tone on the Radio Shack Probe
Scope, but still cannot see if there are any key clicks, etc.). One
commented (I think) that it sounded chirpy at first, but then it
went away. I don't doubt that -- the side tone sounded horrid on
the first key-down, but got better over time. Perhaps there is
still some tweaking to do? Almost like a temperature instability of
some sort. If it had a life of it's own, I'd say it took its time
waking up! Some signals heard were so loud, they were buzzing, but
would then settle down a bit over time.
So, the rig is no longer a virgin. And, I need to find some
*seriously* slow speed stations and start building speed again.
The next rig definitely gets a variable RF out control. I *might*
have gotten 1000mi/watt with it! But, as it is, I only got 200 or
so (running 5 watts).
