I was on last night testing a receiver front end mod to an old HW-7.
For those who do not know about these, they are basically a tri-band
49er. At the moment, 1w is about all I can get out of it, so it is
real QRPp!
I replaced the 40673 FET front end/product detector with a NE602. SW
BC am detection was really killing it. The front end change helped a
lot, but did not totally get rid of the AM detection.
At about 8:30 p.m., in the process of checking it out, I had a nice
chat on 40m with a gentleman in St. Louis who was running 50w into a
vertical.
I got a nice 569 report, with a report of a good tone, no chirp, no
drift signal.
My antenna is a 500 ft horizontal loop, and I think MO is a favored
distance for it.
I was listening for fellow QRPers around 7043 KHz, but didn't hear
anything, so I went for one of the loudest signals on the band.
