Mike - my grey line DX'ing in the morning is nearly 100% towards the
West, into Asia. I work zillions of JAs, HL, 3W, 9K, etc. VERY FEW
contacts to the East at that time. Why? Because the sun has already
risen to my East and clobbered that layer of the ionisphere that
reflects the 40 meter signals. I doubt you'll be working too many of us
mainlanders during your sunrise time.
I easily work into HI in the evenings, usually from about 8:00 till
midnight Pacific time. Might be open later, but I'm usually checking my
eyelids for leaks by that time! In fact, last night (Wednesday) there
was a booming signal on about 7.038 from a guy in Kona, right about the
time I was looking for KG0WE in North Dakota. So, you should be able to
work us from 04:00GMT on into the night. Can't say what the folks in
the Mountain, Central, and Eastern time zones are doing for Hawaii
QSOs. You'll probably see other posts from those "right coasters." :-)
Just about the time 40 meter sunrise greyline is closing down to the
West (about an hour after sunrise), 20 meters is usually wide open into
Europe from here in Northern California.
Hope this helps. 72/73, Jim.
p.s. - you didn't give your call, so I don't know who to look for to
the West! :-)
