For anyone interested in listening for propagation beacons, there are
two beacons involved in the ITU Beacon project.
LN2A is in Norway and VL8IPS is in Australia. They both transmit on
the following frequencies (in kHz)
5470
7870
10407
14405
20945
Then there is VIP in Perth, Western Australia which is a commercial
communication station that, when I've ever heard it, seems to spend a
lot of time marking its frequency. This is on 8521 and 12953 kHz.
The 6 & 10 Report (published monthly by the RSGB Propagation Studies
Committee) gives details of reports of LN2A, VL8IPS and VIP by UK
stations. Reports are usually given as an overall reliability for the
month in four parts of the day (M = Mornings, N = Noon, A = Afternoon
and E = Evening) for each frequency, based on the reports of all
contributors, along with a mean strength.
If anyone is interested in letting me have reports of the beacons,
I'll pass them onto the editors of the 6 & 10 Report as a comparison
against the reports for the UK. If any UK stations are interested in
sending reports, I'm sure these would be welcomed as well.
All helps in giving propagation data and maybe helping those of us who
want to choose the best time and days to use QRP on particular bands a
better chance of success!
Cheers de Dave (G0DJA)
