                ******* Announcement of the 1997 *******
50 States on 40 and 30 Meters (50/40/30) WAS challenge

Greetings to all on QRP-L,

Fifty States in Fifty Days (FSFD) was a lot of fun, but it's over for this
year. All is not lost, however, because the 50/40/30 challenge is coming!

The purpose of the 50 states on 40 and 30 meters WAS challenge is to
provide an opportunity for members to finish off their personal QRP WAS
goal over the next year while still maintaining a balance between work,
family, and ham radio. It is also an opportunity for members to complete
QRP single band WAS, starting with 40 meters.

Will you accept the challenge to work all fifty states on forty meters
using QRP in 1997?

Here's how it works:

Volunteer operators in each state will be on 40 meters and 30 meters for
two hours each in the evening. 50/40/30 operations will be scheduled for
Tuesday and Thursday evenings each week (local time). Each week will have
two states to work. To make things easier to remember, all 50/40/30
operations will take place at the same time unless unforeseen problems
force a change, so keep your eyes open for announcements. The normal
operating schedule is Wednesday and Friday (UTC), 30 meters: 0000Z to
0200Z, and 40 meters: 0200Z to 0400Z.

Forty meters is the main band used for this challenge. Thirty meters is
added as a special treat, but 30 meter QSOs will not count for the prizes.
Even those OTs who worked all fifty states fifty years ago know how hard it
is to do it all on one band. Here's your chance.

The exchange is CALLSIGN, RST, STATE/PROVINCE/COUNTRY, NAME, POWER. The
state will call CQ WAS QRP de KL... All QSOs are limited to 5 watts or
less, of course. Only fully completed QSOs with all the information will
count for the awards, though partial exchanges may qualify you for other
organizations' wallpaper. (QRPers like to do things the hard way!)

Speaking of awards, there will be certificates issued to those who work 30,
40, or 50 of the states. In addition, the station who works the most
states will receive a brand new 38 SPECIAL kit for his or her effort! (In
case of a tie, a random drawing will select the award winner.) The noble
volunteers who represent a state will also be entered in a separate random
drawing for a second 38 SPECIAL transceiver kit.

The state's logs will be posted here on QRP-L, and a monthly update of
status will also be posted.

Fifty on Forty and Thirty will begin very soon. The exact schedule will be
posted Real Soon Now, but the first state to appear will be on March 18 UTC
(that's March 17 US time). There will be two states each week until the
beginning of September. That will give you a few weeks to catch your
breath before fox hunting begins again. The states will be scheduled in
random order.

Stay tuned for more information.

********** PATRIOTIC CALL TO DUTY **********

There are still a few slots open for state representatives, so accept the
challenge!

This is a call to your sense of patriotism! Statesmen and Stateswomen are
called to represent your local state in the diplomatic exchanges scheduled
for 1997. Here is your opportunity to rise above the status of common
citizen to the glory of higher office and national service. We want you!
History awaits you.

Please email K1MG (mgipe@reliablemeters.com) to volunteer your service.
Operators from all states and all levels of experience are needed, so
volunteer today. Who knows, you might actually work all 50 states in ONE
NIGHT!

50/40/30 or fight!
