Tom,
 
I too gave bunches of novice tests in the pre-VE days and I used to pull one
better than you mentioned. We'd start out with "just another" practice
session, after which I'd ask how everyone did, and when anyone said they did
OK, I'd ask for their paper. Then after checking, I'd tell them
"Congratulations, you passed." Always shocked them, but sure eliminated the
jitters. Don't think I ever had anyone finish my Novice CW class who didn't
get licensed. If they stuck it out, they'd pass. And I'd stay with the
practice sessions as long as it took. I really miss teaching the old Novice CW
classes.
