Here is the soapbox for the Spartan Sprint held on March 3.

Although 40 was active with stations I heard very few
Spartan Sprinters. All my activity was on 80. The
89er Plus really did a great job.
My hat's off to KQ4XX, running 50mW from TN and to
AA7QF, from OR with 2watts to hang in there with me
for another great QSO. Conditions at my QTH were
great with lots of QRM from using a DC rcvr.
Finally tally was 11 QSO's with 10 states. Even got
to work the Master Sprinter, W3TS. Thanks gang.
This is FUN!

My ears hurt.....weird QSB - 1 minute nothing, next 10
stations making dx pile noises...I apologize if I stepped on any toes..I
moved when I heard 'em come back up...

Only 4 Q's and only 40 meters. But the good news is that ##@!$$% 7AH
heavy battery is history - got me a new super-stealth 2 AH job to cut
some weight. Bad news is I used my sub-notebook cpu as a keyer; great
practice for field day, but the box which 3.5 pounds:
Emtech NW40 = 1.3
Whiterook key=0.1
Battery =2.3
Notebook =3.5
TOTAL: 7.2
              4. Q's AA7QU-az /K1OJ-tx /W3TU-pa /NQ7K-az
SCORE: 0.55 Qs/Lb

BTW the subnotebook is an ancient Gateway 80286 that eats AA batteries
which is nice for backup - I can always add batteries - can't always find
an outlet to recharge........

Good clean fun, and thanks to ARS for hosting event.

Very strange band conditions.....and using an OHR QRP
Sprint d.c xcvr
didn't help much....even heard some DX.

This time, still not many contacts, but the station weight is coming
down a bit.

OHR QRP Sprint
Whiterook key
Kenwood Phones
4.5 A-h gel-cell.......this has to get smaller!

What an interesting evening of "propagation roulette,"
and many thanks to the fine operators who pulled my 1-watt signal out of
the mud on 40 meters: N0IBT, AA7QU, W3TS, AA7HE, NJ7M and WB0Y. It was
fascinating to hear the band change characteristics throughout the Sprint
period. Loud east coast stations faded as the midwest and west began
pounding in. Soon the pendulum swung the other way. Great fun, and a real
tutorial in Mother Nature's kneading of the airwaves. See you all next
month.

Equipment:

        Index Labs QRP+ 5 watts
        AEA AT-3000 tuner
        135' ladderline-fed dipole at 30'
        CMOS Super Keyer II
        Whiterook MK-44 iambic paddle
        2.5 Ah gel cell battery
        external speaker

My fully portable station contains an MFJ-901B and Heath HM-9. I used
the AEA tuner because this is the tuner already connected to the
ladderline.

Conditions on 40M were as usual, awful. So I went down
to 80M to fight the noise. Low and behold I made 9 QSOs including W4DON,
WJ4P, VP2V/K1DW, K1OJ, WD8RIF, WA1QVM, WB1HBE, K7LFY, and K1CL.

I have a super light station for 40M but on 80 I have to use my TenTec
Argo 556, ZM-1 tuner, a biggish gel cell and Envirotronics key.

If the test were started while we ha some daylight left the 40M scores
sure would be better

QRP RIG IS QRT FOR A RELAY SO BIG BERTHA IS
BACK.....WELL I HAD FUN ANYHOW....THE BANDS WERE NOT KIND TO US HERE IN
TEXAS....

80 was totally devoid of SS acivity here. However, even
with only 2 q's, I am confident that I have captured the high score
trophy for San Marino this month. Just goes to show that cream always
rises to the top!

Thanks to Russ for being there on 40--otherwise the cream might have
sunk!
