Hi Marshall... unfortunately '73' has deteriorated steadily-to the point
where I expect its publication is not long for this world. I have always
either laughed or been disturbed by Wayne's various diatribes and wacky
causes, but in the past few years have begun to doubt ... well... his
personal ...uh-h-h... credibility. Any publication usually reflects the
actions and attitudes of its publisher... as well as his ...uh-h-h...
credibility. Combine that with the late non-ham editor, his long-time feud
with the ARRL, and it is not surprising to hear about the article.

Wayne is always going on about the need for new hams, and the need for
reaching out to the third-world/etc. Somehow I do not think the big ham
manufacturers are greatly concerned about the simpler aspects of amateur
radio, but rather their bottom lines. I suspect they make a bit more on an
IC-781 or FT-1000 than our QRP-L manufacturers. While the single band Green
Mountain rigs do operate SSB-proving it CAN be done without spending
thousands of $$$-most of the interest on QRP-L is in small, simple, and
inexpensive rigs. Perfect to provide inexpensive communicability in the
field-third world field or not-but not really suited for PACTOR/etc.

With todays emphasis on 'greener' use of materials, power, and radiation,
Wayne can not only NOT see the trees, but is missing the entire new growth
in the forest as well. His prejudices, his feuds, and his inattention to
where so much of the REAL activity is in amateur radio have already cost
him the bulk of his readership, and articles like this one only emphasize
all the negatives he has come to represent to me-and probably most others
on this reflector and elsewhere.
