A Thought for Discussion - QRO Kits

Dear Friends,

Everyday I am more amazed by the ingenuity and talents of the dozens of
small business persons who are actively involved in the design,
development and marketing of QRP kits of all kinds. And I use the term
'business persons' in it's most positive sense because I know that, for
most, it is more a labor of love than a cash cow... probably a whole lot
more.

But I am equally amazed that kit designers are not showing more of an
interest in QRO kits. As many T-T Scouts as I seem to be working... I
know there is a market out there for QRO rigs... reasonably priced and
simple to operate. Why couldn't that market be tapped just a little?

A simplistic answer might be: "Well... they can always build a QRP xcvr
kit and add a simple, outboard, solid state linear amplifier!" That is
true... but my feeling is that most operators would rather have it all
self-contained. Or how about this option... a QRO xcvr kit which can be
built QRP and later 'upgraded' with a module to QRO... with a power
switch and continuously variable power output?

I believe that the availability of good quality QRO kits would draw QRO
ops into the world of kit building and many would find their way into the
QRP ranks. Certainly not all of the QRO builders... but a fair number...
would probably try a QRP kit or throw the QRP switch on their QRO kit
xcvr and give it a whirl.

And I am encouraging Eimac and Svetlana to offer kits to a certain young
fellow whose name and call (I promised W1HUE) will not be mentioned... Hi
Hi.
