Hi Everyone,
Pse excuse the BW but I'm so psyched, I have to tell SOMEONE!
Just got back from a business trip to New England. So as not
to go thru HAM withdrawls on the trip, I brought the 49er.
Now I'll humbly admit that the 15 hrs I've spent calling on
this thing never resulted in a contact, but that didn't disuade
me (persistant or stupid?). Well, I stayed at K1EYB's QTH.
He was in FL doing the snowbird thing and he brought his HR
gear with him to work /4, leaving only his antenna farm and a
12v supply. Well, I hooked the 49er up to his 40m dipole and
his 12v supply. "BUZZZZZZ!" was all I heard. The filtering was
less than ahhh, optimal. So, I unhooked the supply and connected
a 9v battery and put it inside where there was already made a
place for it. Inserted the 7040 rock that Chuck generously
provided to me. Hit the switch and heard wall to wall CW.
All right! Now, if only someone can hear my mighty 200mw that
this rig belts out when running on 9v...
I called and called. Nothing. Then suddenly, I heard W2RXG
calling CQ, come BLASTING in. I guestimated zero-beat with
the rig (I had designed in an offset of 100-500hz, depending
on the OSC freq) and gave him a call. I was floored to hear
"KB0VCC/1 de W2RXG" come right back. AND he gave my thunderous
200mW signal an impressive 579 RST!
Bob and I had a nice little QSO. What a blast it was to
FINALLY work someone with this little rig (even if he was
only abt 275mi away). It made my whole trip! Not since my
very first QSO have I experienced such excitement. After that,
NOTHING could happen on this trip to darken my perspective
on life. Guess I've got it bad, huh? Now I'm REALLY anxious
for the arrival of my OHR 100...
