Well I too must add my two cents. There has been a lot of messages about
how wrong young Extra Class Adam Mclaughlin's letter was. So I've decided
to write to the other side of the letter. (Point-Counter Point, Shannon
you ugly b.tch) If you sit back and reread it, you can see where he has
hit the nail on the head.
He's absolutely right when he implies that the Ops on the receiving end
are the real QRP heroes. How many QRPer's here have received there 1000
Mile per Watt certificate and failed to see to it that the guy on the
other end got one too? Under the rules he is entitled, QRO and all! We
as QRPer's need to make it our obligation to see that the QRP contact/QSO
is enjoyable for the other guy too. If we can do this every time, QRP
contacts will be sought after instead of shunned.
One thing that this letter clearly shows is that we as a group need to
improve our Elmering. I ask you, how does a bright young Ham get from zip
to Extra in 6 months and not be exposed to fun side of QRP? The answer is
simple, we weren't there to show him!
Oh, and one more thing. To those that would say that the ARRL should not
of published this letter and feel there is some sinister plot behind it
incorporating the QRO manufacturers. Poppycock! Adams letter was well
written and expressed a clear and different opinion, exactly the stuff
that should be printed in the Correspondence column. If QRP couldn't
stand up to a bit of criticism from time to time, than it wouldn't be
worth anything.
The bottom line is if we want QRP to be perceived well by the general Ham
community than we have to make a good showing of it and promote it.
