Jeff,
After looking inside my AT-11, it seems to me that it is more
likely that when you had the xtal standing up, it was shorting out
the pads below it. If you look at the pads and the 1 megohm
1/8 watt resistor near the xtal, they are in a position that could
be contacted by the bottom metal surface of the xtal can.
So much for mystical reasons of malfunction.
