Dear Jim, Ed and friends,
Feel free to post my reply on the reflector. I just didn't want to take
up space with an anecdotal story that might ruffle some feathers. BTW...
I now use a KLM linear loaded vertical (half of a "big stick"), with a
loading coil where the shorting strap used to be, elevated about forty
feet at it's base. My five radials slope down to about twenty feet. I
use relays to pick the tap on the coil 1825 1875 3525 3795 7025 Khz.
However, I must warn you that putting the coil away from the current feed
point puts some pretty big voltages on the relay contacts when QRO. They
*will* arc if the right relays are not chosen. And the price of high
voltage relays is still astronomical. I got mine many years ago from
Fair Radio when they could be had for $10. I never tried using high
voltage vacuum relays to switch the radials. I have no idea what the
capacitance is between the contacts of a vacuum relay and if it could be
used successfully. But it would be an expensive proposition I am sure...
Right now, I am not switching radials because the thing is up too blasted
high. Go for it... and you will be very pleased with your One Element
Beam.
