QRP Power supply question

I am still waiting for my 38special to arrive, and have lots of time
to dream up what I'd like to do with it :).

1st question: I understand the rig operates on 8V, but will use a
9V source just fine. What about a 7.2V source? RS has racing car
batts (NiCads) with 700-1700mAH ratings, complete with connectors.

2nd Question: Given a 9V source will work well on the radio, is
there a way to install a 9V battery (nicad) inside the radio and
still have the option to use an ext 9V (or 12V?) source? Ideally,
the rig would use an external supply where available, while charging
the internal 9V nicad to use as a backup. I'd be interested in
circuts/boards etc. that are available for this. I have no idea
what I'm talking about (electrically speaking) -- what are the
requirements of a 9V charger? min Voltage? does the amperage need
regulation?

I'm not sure of the benefit, other than not having to open the case
to change power sources (I'm also lazy ...)

I found some 2-prong connectors at Radio Shack, that will only work
one way (one prong larger than the other prong), so I'm
contemplating just leaving the recepticle hanging out the back of
the box, and having a couple different sizes of alligator clips, and
a 9V connector, to use. But it would be nice to just carry the box
and antenna ...
