Ok, I'm happy. One hundred milliwatts ain't all that bad for a day's worth of
blowing stuff up. The VN10KM will work... you might get about a watt out.
That's what I got out of this one until it smoked too. Something about the
way this works: when I have TC2 tuned to what sounds like a reasonable signal
-- as in: no squirrelly sounding sub-tones on the carrier -- Q2 will stay
cool for hours. But one tiny squootch off that very narrow place in the
tuning of TC2 and it's hot rock city. So hot it melted the plastic on the key
jack (back plane of box also heat sink and connector... so you can imagine
how hot that got... even with lots of heat sink goo and a chunk of fairly
thick aluminum back plane/back panel).
Running it stock now. No fancy stuff. Just .100 watts and rather nicely. I
was tempted to make a couple calls but figured that I'd be better off just
sitting down to some food and a beer. Which I'm gonna do soon as Cindy gets
back and we go to the store. Well, after that then. Whatever.
Nice little radio. Definite learning experience. Always wondered why I never
got hooked on digital stuff. Now I think I know.
Next?

.... been working on a beginner's web page. Got some neat stuff off other
sites. Only have to find that picture of the oldest boy to use as a link
button to his page. It's the picture of him at about age 5 standing
buck-nekkid in the bathroom with a paper bag mask over his head. Here's my
kid. Click here to embarrass him at his own home page. Like the weasel kid in
the "Simpsons" says: "hah hah."
