I'm sure that soldering the header to the tops of the pads would be
mechanically and electrically OK, but somehow the idea offended my
aesthetic sensibilities :-) . So here's what I did.
With one of the xyl's emory boards I filed down the pins until they just fit
snugly while protruding through the holes.
Hold the emory board parallel to each side of each row of 7 and you're
filing 7 at a time. Crosswise you file 2 at a time. If you can get the
board in diagonally, you can file down the corners of the pins, which is
actually the best way to reduce the size. (Remember that hypotenuse stuff?)
It didn't take but about 5 minutes, doing it by stages and testing the fit
each time. One of those small, thin hobby files would do it faster, but
might take off too much too quickly.
Since this was a little hard on the gold plating I tinned the pins right
away to inhibit corrosion.
