38 spcl. questions

I received my 38 spcl. kit last week, and unlike the 40-9er which I built
in a hurry so I could get on the air on HT I plan to savour this one...

I have looked at the kit, read the discussions of the mods and have some
questions:

1. I have raided an old TV for potentiometers. I have found ones for
the RF gain and RIT. They seem to be inear taper. Is this a
        problem?

2. I am thinking of installing a switch (something like double pole,
triple throw) as a low/high power switch to control the use of
the 5W mod. It seems feasible but am I missing something?

3. Some have reported that the tuning is a bit finicky. Would it be
a good idea to replace the 100K pot with a (say) 90K one in series
with a 10K one where the 10K one could provide fine tuning? If so
what would be a good ratio of values? 90-10, 80-20, etc.?

4. Is it possible to use a TV UHF control to build an antenna tuner?
If so are there any articles on it?

BTW the badgers are still hibernating here.
