I've landed in Fayetteville, NC. Stop tomorrow:
Jax, FL. Jeff, your offer still stand?
I'd like to say the following...
I listened on or around 7.040 the entire trip down from DC, and heard NO
other QRP stations. Admittedly, the only ones I had any luck working
were the ones who were S9 or better, but this was a LOT of fun!
Maybe tomorrow I'll try 20m CW mobile and snag some DX during the
contest? Maybe I'll be on 30, who knows? Gee, I really like the Alinco
DX-70!!!
For now, I'm sitting in the Motel 6 near the Interstate (95). If anyone
in Fayetteville wants to go out for dinner or something, I can be reached
at 910-485-8122, ext. 139. I should add that while I have an AP-10
portable ant, and the DX-70 is running in the room, I'm on the ground
floor AND the antenna is mounted INSIDE the room, on the A/C unit.
I'll work scheds within reason :) but will be OFF the computer to free up
the phone!
BTW, with this junky antenna, I just worked MA on 5 watts (N1WMG) on 30.
I will also leave the radio on or around 10106 unless 15 opens to Alaska
or I'm working someone OR if someone asks me out to dinner.
Lessons learned:
A dictation-mini cassette makes a dandy logging system.
An Outbacker is a decent antena for mobile ops (Perth Plus). You get a
LOT of weird and interesting looks.
Five watts is NOT a lot of power when mobile, but it's better than zero.
THANKS to EVERY person who's NOT QRP for working us!!! For an idea of
what it's like, drop a 10-15 db attenuator in line and see how loud the
other guy is...and remember, the noise does NOT get lower in real life!
