I just got returned from a winter backpacking trip and I can say from
experience that CANDLES are a way to raise the temp in a snow cave from
25 to 30 degs... BUT I agree w/Dan extreme caution must be used. I had
several vent holes in the top of my snow cave open when I was burning
candles and NEVER left one lit while asleep or I probably wouldn't be
found till the spring thaw. ALSO...When it was time to shut down for the
evening CANDLES OUT!! and I let a headlamp (4-D cell firefighter type)
run till dawn. I must admint the candles added a lot of atmosphere and
warmth to our cave experience...BUT extreme caution and awareness of the
poteintial danger of these "darksuckers" are in order. Respect mother
nature!....Because she has NO respect for you if you don't!!!
Just having fun w/QRP & Adventures...Steve!
