Permission to include articles

I just wanted to respond to the two who requested permission to include
articles posted to the QRP mailing list in their QRP club newsletters.

First of all, I have no problem if you do it, but I don't feel the
permission is mine to give. While it is very nice for you to let everyone
know you are interested in doing this, I don't want you to assume that lack
of objection constitutes consent.

I don't know exactly what copyright law is on quasi-publications like this
mailing list, or Usenet news groups...it has been discussed often, but I
don't know of any case law. I go under the assumption that the author of a
message or article is the copyright holder, and by submitting it to the
list or group, he or she has given permission for it to be published in
that forum.

However, I also go under the assumption that the author retains other
publication rights. I know that it has been a hot topic in at least one
newsgroup which I frequent (rec.aviation): a certain national aviation
magazine included articles published in the newsgroup without permission,
and the authors were sometimes quite perturbed, even if credited...what you
write in one forum may not be what you would write for a different set of
people in a different medium.

So, if you want to pick up text published here, please contact the
author(s) individually to secure their permission for each thing you want
to publish. As long as you do that, the "list management" has no
objection. Sound OK?
