ORH Sprint & Voltage

Last night I finished my 40m OHR Sprint. Given everything in the documentation
says its a 12v radio I powered it up using a camcorder battery (12.2v).
Everything aligned/tuned just fine, except for 3 problems:

        - anything more than about 1/8 of full volume and there was a loud
feedback like howl in the headphones.

        - xmit output was at very best about 1.2 watts.

        - receiver sensitivity seemed low.

I was watching the battery voltage with a DVM the whole time and it held
at 12+ volts.

I then used a 13.8v power supply I had. Except for some expected hum the above
problems were gone.

Do I likely have a problem with my radio, or is the Sprint really not a 12v
radio?

Thanks,
Scott
